Ascend has a primary focus on the assessment and treatment of behavior disordered children and adolescents. In our work
with the children, we have greatly expanded our knowledge of this ever-increasing population of troubled youth. As our knowledge
and experience has grown, we have identified areas that strengthen the likelihood of treatment success. This has developed
into an integrated, multi-disciplinary treatment plan, outlined briefly here. Certain patterns have become evident in the
background of the children and adolescentsseen with severe behavior disorders.
One common feature is exposure or probable exposure to drugs in utero, and in many cases, exposure at birth. This exposure
is known through research to have a profound impact on the pre-frontal lobes of the developing brain. This area of the brain
is in charge of organizing, planning for the future, evaluating consequences, making judgments.
At Ascend, most children beginning treatment for behavior disorders have had a previous diagnosis of Attention-Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder, Depression, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (or Conduct Disorder), or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Separation Anxiety features and Intermittent Explosive Disorder features are often seen also.
In addition, most have had chronic bedwetting without medical cause and a tendency for high pain/low pain tolerance. Once
assessed and the history of the child has been reviewed, the diagnosis may be revised to reflect a need to rule out a diagnosis
of Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder. A Pediatric Psychiatrist or Pediatric Neurologist may be consulted to review the diagnosis.
